Bio

Lori Edwards, a clinical specialist in community health nursing and public health, directs the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing Community Outreach Program and the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers Program. Her teaching, research, and clinical work focus on the community-based participatory approach. She has worked with underserved populations for more than 25 years both nationally and internationally. In Baltimore, she integrates international health strategies into local programs. Ms. Edwards has been honored widely as an educator, mentor, and public health nursing expert and has won several School teaching awards. She was named the 2004 Maryland Association of Higher Education Outstanding Faculty of the Year and the 2007 Nurse Health Care Hero of the Year by the Maryland Daily Record for her leadership of the Community Outreach Program that educates, trains, and places over 150 student nurses to work with Baltimore's most underserved populations. Motivated by her love of teaching nursing students and striving to improve the health of communities, she is pursuing a doctoral degree in public health and conducting community-based participatory research addressing occupational health issues among Vietnamese nail salon workers. Ms. Edwards balances her life as faculty, clinician, researcher, and student with a personal passion for ballroom, swing, and Latin dancing and for outdoor adventures.
