Welcome to week three.
As our spreadsheet is growing size and complexity,
we want automation wherever possible,
especially when we need to draw on information
that is stored in different parts of a workbook.
We need to find mechanisms to ensure that our work is fast,
efficient and free of errors.
These Excel functionalities will come into play when you're working
with files from say different departments in your organization.
However, they become even more essential when you're doing
something more complex like completing a bank reconciliation,
or even finalizing a text return.
It could even be something very common like getting a data ready for a mail merge,
as part of a conference on networking events.
Alex has been asked to help populate some data in particular spreadsheets,
with values from other spreadsheets.
Manually attending to this is going to be too time-consuming,
and of course prone to multiple errors.
Excel has a great toolbox of functions just for this task.
These functions can be used to help you find exactly what you
want from one spreadsheet based on certain criteria,
and then feed this information into another spreadsheet, genius.
This week, Alex is building an Automated Quotation System for a network company.
Here you will learn about the key functions he's going to use to do his job.
We're starting off with an introduction to lookups with the choose function.
After that we are working through the use of
the V-lookup function to find approximate as well as exact matches.
The match function is going to help us find a position,
and then we will combine index and match to create dynamic lookups.
As always we have a series of practice videos to
equip and empower you with these co-Excel skills.
Download the Excel workbooks and work alongside
us in the upcoming practice videos step-by-step.
Practice makes permanent, so come back and work through these videos again.
Remember, the practice challenge after these videos which will show you
the true power and efficiency of using lookup functions in Excel.
Check out the toolbox as you always do,
and of course this week's great initiative.
Now, let's sit down with Nicky and talk about automating lookups in more detail.
