Hi my name is Dong Suh a professor working for the Graduate Institute of ferrous technology
POSTECH Korea, welcome to the lecture on the microstructure and the phase transformation
in steel.
This lecture is designed to give you a fundamental understanding on the microstructure evolution
and the related phase transformation phenomena in iron and steel.
Actually this lecture consists of three part. In the first part the phase transformation
in iron and steel which generate the microstructure which is close to the equilibrium state will
be considered and the second part we will cover the non-equilibrium microstructure and
related phase transformation phenomena such as martensite
and bainite transformation.
In the last part we are going to consider the role of alloying element which is often
used to control the desired properties of the steel product. The phase transformation
is one of the most important subject in the material science
field, it is because the phase transformation governs the evolution of microstructure which
eventually enables us to control the desired properties of
the material.
In that sense, the understanding of the phase transformation and related microstructure
evolution can be regarded as a critical step for the alloys and process design to obtain
advanced steel product which will be very important for the future development of our
industry. Here at first we will consider the concept of phase and phase transformation
and then think about the microstructure of iron and steel in an equilibrium condition.
