In this module, we will look at who the top network and Internet service providers are. We will look at basic networking concepts. I will give you an introduction to what's known as network functions virtualization. And we'll take a peek at software-defined networks. We will learn the names and basic technical capabilities of the leading long-range and short-range wireless protocols. Again, in the spirit of the notion of this course, this is a survey course, so we're going to see a lot of companies' names. All these companies represent an opportunity for employment for you in the future. Look at basic networking concepts. You've had networking class, so deep dive, this will be a piece of cake for you. Grasp the basics of what's referred to as network functions virtualization. And closely related to that is software defined networks. Learn the names and basic information on the leading long-range and short-range wireless protocols. So I'm going to look at some leading providers, some terminology and topologies and get into what network functions virtualization is and software defined networks. I am not an expert in either one of those areas. I went and found some educational material. One of the short videos we'll watch is from Georgia Tech, it's certainly good. So here's a survey of Internet service providers in the US. There was AT&T and Verizon. Okay, so we got AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner, Charter, Century Link, CableVision, Cox, SuddenLink, CableOne, Frontier Communications. And I'm certain there's more than these but this is a handful of the top ones that I was able to put together. European Internet service providers, Vodafone, if you've been to Europe before, they're big there. Tele Columbus, TIM, Infostrada, Ono, Altibox, Virgin Media. In India, many of you are probably familiar with these. The national Internet backbone is BSNL. Excel Broadband. Is it Tata or Tata, Tata? >> [INAUDIBLE] >> Tata. [LAUGH] My bad, Tata. Hathaway, YOU broadband, ACT broadband, Beam Fiber, and Micronova Network Solutions. In China, China Mobil, China Netcom, China Telecom. The source there, Rediff, they listed the top world Internet service providers. HelloVision in South Korea, NTT East in Japan. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Broadband Network. In France, there's Orange. In Latvia, there's Balti-Com. Romania, there's Madnet. I like the name of that one, Madnet. You see Vodafone again there is big in Ireland. Czech Republic has got UPC. Top world players in the cellular IoT market. Well, this is a list from our market researcher Markets and Markets. So Qualcomm, no surprise there. I don't now if it's Gem or Gemalto from the Netherlands, Sierra Wireless. U-Blox Holding out of Switzerland, MediaTek out of Taiwan, Telit Communications out of the UK. ZTE Corporation in China, Mistbase out of Sweden, Sequans Communications out of France, CommSolid out of Germany.
