[MUSIC] how are you doing? Hanging in there? Yes, no. Are you still smiling, I'd like to see smiles. Come on guys, give me some smiles. I was going to give a 10 minute lecture, but my presentation will be five minutes. So I will be talking really really fast, and you have to just pay attention. Give me your undivided attention so I can finish in five minutes. So, we are going to talk about conservation of our planet today. And right after this short presentation we will have a gift speaker. So this lecture was supposed to be presented by Dr. Jeff Chester. And you have his information on the syllabus, and I have received a bunch of videos from him that I will post on our canvas. Because you really need to learn about his activities and what he's doing, to save our oceans and conserving our planet. So, why am I talking about conserving our planet? This is life want to one. Why do we even have to worry about this? I just want one or two answers and then we continue. What? We live on this planet. Very good. What else? Yes. >> The healthiness of the planet it also affect the healthiness of us. >> Yes. >> Because we breath in air and that affect our health. >> Fantastic. Absolutely. We live on this planet and conserving our planet and having a healthy planet is going to impact our health, right? So the last thing we want to do is this, right. Trashing our planet, but it seems like we are doing a pretty good job of that. So if you pay attention to this picture, in the middle of a picture, you see somebody who is sitting on a boat. And just going through the water on his boat in the middle of this trash. And to make it even worse, this is what we do, this is something else that we do. So there's really a very fine line between nature and our trash. And as you can see on the slides, you have some animals there. And when we talk about oceans, that's what Dr. Chester was going to talk about. We are doing a pretty good job, of polluting our oceans. And this is it guys, so we can say that I'm going to trash this planet. And in 20 or 3 years, I'm going to get on a space shuttle and go to another planet, and I trash that planet. Can we do that, do we have that option? No, we don't. This is it. So it is really your job, the job of this generation, you guys to make sure that you're improving what you see on this slide. And the one before. So the next slide, I have a bunch of YouTube videos. And I highly highly recommend you see them. And I'm going to include them in the online version of the class. But for the sake of time, I'm not going to show any of them because we've already lost a few minutes dealing with the microphone. And I really want our guest speaker to have more time. But I highly recommend that you watch these YouTube videos because I think when you watch them, you will really pay attention. You are going to really pay attention, to how much plastic you use, how much you you recycle, and how much you reuse. So, these are some ways that we can protect our planet. So protecting the planet starts with you, with me, with all of us. And I'm not going to review this, what you see on this slide one by one. Today, I'm going to only focus on one box on this slide, which is the reduce, reuse and recycle. But if you pay attention, and if you look at this slide, there are many many ways that we can protect our planet. And it starts as simple as conserving the water. How many of us when we brush our teeth, we just let the water run because there's only two minutes, right? So don't do that. That's a very simple way to conserve water. Shop wisely. What does that mean? That means that, when you go shopping, take your own bags. I have these bags, these reusable bags in my backpack, in my car, in my office everywhere. So this is a very good place to start because you are going to cut back on the plastic pollution. We talked about plastic. I was at the faculty meeting today, and this is what we were given. Do you think this is enough water to justify using this much plastic for? And what do you think people do with this? Be either throw them away, or if you are responsible to be recycled them. So, do you think this is a good idea, no. And what kind of water do you think this is? Do you think this came from Fiji Mountains, or from some springs? It says purified water. Why not drinking our own purified water, right? We have all these water fountains on campus and you can just feel, I love that. So can you, can you show your bottle to everybody, you see that? So this is something that we can all use. And if you don't have one, let me know, I will buy you one. Anybody in this classroom who doesn't have like a bottle that you can use. Please send me an email and come to my office, I will get you one. So I am going to end my portion of this presentation by the three hours. Reduce reduce use and that's how you're going to use it. You're going to keep reusing our stuff and reduce, goes back also to recycling and reusing. Recycle everything, recycled glass, recycled cans, papers, electronics. And this is a website that you can use, earth911.org, to get more information about recycling and reusing. So you were wondering what I'm doing here? What do you think I'm doing here, what is this? These are some items that can be reused. These are some items that there used to be that, I mean, I guess they're still owned by me. They're owned by me, they are washed or dry clean and they can be reused. So what I'm going to ask you to do is that, starting today, start doing what I'm doing right now. And I'm going to leave them here, and you can come and grab them. But there is one condition, and they're actually quite nice, some of them are quite nice. This one, is a computer bag that those of you who are 10 conferences and meetings, you probably get one of these. And what do we do with them, they just sit in our closets. I used to have 20 of these bags. And I donated them all. Actually I watched a very inspiring ted X talk, about recycling and reusing these bags. So what you see on this table are the things that are owned by me, but I like to my students or anybody else to reuse them. So the condition is that, if you take one of these and I told you they're not bad. One of them even has a tag, that is embarrassing. The condition is, you need to reuse and you need to donate one of your items. And if it's a nice one, if it's a nice clothing item, please come to my office first, because I may take it right. These are my stuff, you're taking my things, so I would like to have one of yours. So start practicing that. And what else do I have here? That's pretty much it. So these are, I'm going to leave them after the class and please don't be shy. I am thinking about starting something like this next to my office or next to my lab. And then we are going to constantly reuse and recycle. So this is the practical for my portion. Start with one change for reduce, recycle and reuse. So this is what we've practiced today. [MUSIC]
