[MUSIC] Welcome to life101 and welcome to the new version of life101. Because in this quarter, you're going to retake all the lectures that some of you may have seen with your friends for the online version. So we are going to retake all the lectures this year, so what you're going to see in the classroom are two videographers. And you probably received the announcement on the canvas website for the release form. And if you don't want to be in the videos, that is totally fine, I won't blame you. I'm a little bit shy with these things myself, but it would be probably better if you sit in the back rows just in case, just so, just let us know if you didn't want to be in the videos. So today, we are very lucky because we have a guest speaker for the class. But before I introduce our guest speaker, I want to kind of set the stage for this course and we're going to get started. So you're in the right room, right? You're here for life101, okay? You're not here for chemistry or physics or, okay? Because last year, I had a student two years ago who sat through the whole class, and he thought it was another class, so I'm just making sure. So we are going to talk about the topics that we present in life101, and you have already seen them in the syllabus. But what I'm going to do today is to review them very, very quickly so that we are all on the same phase and same stage when it comes to this class. So we are going to start the class today with this topic, adopting good habits, and I'm going to spend a few minutes on this topic after I'm done reviewing the life101 topics. We are going to talk about the ideology, physiology, symptoms, and health outcomes of stress, so that would be next week. But let me ask you this question before I go further, is there any student in this class right now, who has no stress, like no stress? Like you say, this topic is really not for me because if that's the case, you're okay, you're excuse next week. But, you have to come and see me in my office hour and tell me why and share with me and actually teach me, what do you do to be completely stress-free? I like to know who those students are. We're going to talk about nutrition and wellness, and we're going to make this topic very easy. I'm not going to present diet after diet and counting calories and things like that. We are going to talk about some practical approaches to eat better for wellness. And then, usually when we do that, we usually end up having healthier lives. They are going to talk about mindfulness and emotional intelligence. This is a topic that I have found over the past six years that I have thought this course very interesting and students really, really like this topic. The many mental and physical health benefits of exercise, so raise your hand, or maybe I shouldn't ask this question. Okay, so you're not going to be on the video when you answer this question. Raise your hand if you regularly exercise, and by regular exercise, I'm talking about a minimum of three days a week. Okay good, so you're going to change the rest of the class this quarter, we are going to talk about the signs of sleep. How many of you sleeps eight hours every night, every single night? No, it's every single night, you, okay, yes. Good, so you too, how many students raise their hands? Just two, okay three, so you are going to give this lecture because you obviously know what you're doing, so you're going to help us. The health benefits of volunteering and giving back and in this topic, we are also going to talk about the science of gratitude, compassion and altruism. We talk about bad drugs on college campuses, do you think we have any bad drugs on this campus? Yes, no? So you will be surprised to learn that one of the bad drugs that I'm going to talk about is something that you don't even think it's a bad drug? Energy drink, gosh, now I'm going to lose half of the students in this class after this lecture. Managing personal finances, how many of you guys are doing a good job in managing your personal finances? What is your name? >> Carson. >> Carson, I think Carson should be teaching this class because every time I ask a question, he raised his hands, okay, great. Conservation of our planet and nature therapy, this is how we end the class. So if you're looking at the topics, all these 10 topics that I put on these slides, what do you think they all have in common, what do they have in common? Yes, discipline? >> [INAUDIBLE] >> Okay, what is your name? Amir, so Amir said what they all have in common is discipline. Okay, you're absolutely right because to achieve them, you need to have some discipline and that's what we're going to talk about today, what else? What else do you think they have in common, yes? >> [INAUDIBLE] >> Very good, what is your name? Valentine, Valentine said that maybe to enhance our lifestyle and to improve our life and that's exactly right. The main objective of this course is what you see on this slide, to challenge and motivate you, to make positive changes in life. I developed this class six years ago, and I developed this class six years ago for one student. This was one of my students who came to my office and the moment she sat down, she started crying because she was worried about not getting accepted into medical school. This was a bio-size student with a 3.8 GPA, research, experience, publication, you name it. But, she was stressed out because she wasn't sure if she was going to get accepted to medical school, and she was crying. So six years ago, I decided to develop this class based on what this student told me. And also, a little informal, survey that I did among my own students in the lab, in the classes I was teaching, and I realized that we have an epidemic of stress. So do you agree with me that we do have an epidemic of stress? And the epidemic of stress is not unique to our university, it's nationwide. There is an epidemic of stress on college campuses nationwide. So my hope, although, you may think that some of these topics have nothing to do with stress, but, they do. So really, the main goal of this class is what you see here, and I'm really hoping that together, all of us. Because I don't want to be standing here and lecturing, [COUGH] we are going to achieve that. We are going to improve our mental and physical health by attending the lectures and by practicing them.
