[MUSIC] We've already talked about how architecture is complex because we need to constantly collaborate with so many different disciplines and different professionals. But, it's not only that we need to coordinate many people. But architects usually need to coordinate a great number of ideas at the same time. And as we know from everyday life, whenever we have so many things to remember we're much better at writing all of them down, then trying to hold everything in our head. And that's true for designers and even more, designers not only we don't only try to write down and sketch our ideas, but we want to do that in such way that we can easily re-arrange and shuffle these ideas. That's why, you'll often see designers using things like Post-it notes. Things like Post-it notes are really practical because you just write down some concepts and you move them around literally. And just by having all these concepts visually in front of you on the table help you just make some new connections, which is the essence of creative thinking. The reason why this works is because seeing things is much easier than remembering or imagining them. That's why by sketching or writing things down we move things out of our head on paper, so that we can take this cognitive effort off of brain and use this extra brain power to actually think about what we do with these ideas. The reason why this works is because seeing and reading things is much easier for our brains than trying to imagine or remember things. That's why by sketching or writing things down, we take those concepts out of our brains, so that we can dedicate this extra brain power for creative thinking, for actually thinking what do we do about this concept. And that's especially true for architecture and design because these are very visual mediums and it's very, very difficult to imagine forms and visuals in our head. You can for example, you can really never, no matter how hard you try, you can never imagine an entire building. You can only have either a very general idea of what the building might look like or you can have a specific idea about some details, but you can never get exactly the big picture in the detail. And that's why you need to offload and make it easy for your brain by sketching things down. That's also one of the reasons why you often see that designers and architects draw well. It's not because we were born with a talent, it's just that we really needed to draw very much so that we could think better. So, don't worry if your sketches don't look well. Most of us we started with just stick figures and that's fine because your sketches, sure, it's not important for the sketches to look good. What's really important is that they're focused and they explain to yourself and to other people your idea and what exactly is the concept that you tried to communicate. So, at this moment, just remember that as a designer, you really want to use your hands to help you think better. And in fact this is the reason why in this course we will ask you to do some things, because it's only by doing the design that you can learn about design. [MUSIC]
