For your assignment this week, you're going to want to do all of your edits and fix all the performances that you need to. And then you want to create a new mix for a good balance to go into the mixing stage. Now, this doesn't have to be perfect yet, but your balance of volume on your faders and panning should have a good representation for feedback from your peers. >> Just generally, as a producer at this moment, I'm kind of playing it for a lot of people. This is the place I feel like I have that one last mix stage to correct everything I can and so I'm trying to find specific things though. The question is, how do you prep people you're asking for feedback? I'm playing it for someone. How do you do that? It's kind of an uncomfortable thing, but what's your process? >> At this point, we have all the parts recorded. One of the things that I listen to when people play things for me at this stage is, are there any things that could be left out? Because almost everything is a little bit better if it's more focused, it's kind of past the time that we're going to be adding things. The question that I like to ask is, are there any elements that maybe we can mute that guitar for the verse and bring it in on the choruses? Maybe there's something that's not quite working and yeah, we should try leaving it out. >> Yeah. Rick Rubin often credits himself as a music reducer rather than a music producer because his job is to come in at this stage and go mute that, mute that, mute that, now that's the record. Trying to give some focus because next week, you're going to be doing the mix. >> I think that is great, we should be thinking about what we can reduce but I would also think about the things that we were working on this past week, which is our edit. We just did all this editing, and this is a great chance to see rhythmically, are things grooving? I find myself a selective listener at times. I've been so focused on a vocal that I don't even notice that the drums are a little out of time. So that might be another way that your peers can help you, generally. Is the rhythms there? I like your point, just removing things. I think that's stunning, it's great.
