Welcome to Oral Communication for Engineers course. After finishing this course you'll have knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to comfortably speak in public about engineering related topics. In this course you'll learn how to create a communication strategy, develop clear and persuasive messages, create strong visual support in PowerPoint or other presentation software. You will learn how to present data effectively, how to deliver presentations with confidence and professionalism, how to give formal presentations, pitches, and impromptu presentations, and how to manage online presentations. Engineers face particularly difficult challenges when speaking in public. You have to explain complex ideas. Translate technical language into simpler concepts, and persuade others to implement your recommendations. This course is designed to specifically address oral communication in engineering settings. We will talk about how to decide what to say, we'll work on organizing content in such a way that others will want enjoy listening to you. You will design slides, graphs, and diagrams for your presentations. You will practice delivering your accountance with power and confidence. We will also talk about persuasion and purposeful language choices. And we'll give you pointers and teach you exercises that help with public speaking anxiety. Finally, because oral communications happens in many different settings, you will practice impromptu speaking, pitching ideas and presenting online. The course uses experiential methods of learning. Lectures will be followed by activities. You will immediately apply learning in real life situations. You simply can not learn public speaking without practicing public speaking. The main course assignment is a five week long project in a real life presentation. Yes, at the end of this course we want you to deliver a real presentation to a real life audience about something important to your company, organization, to you or to your community. Specific weekly assignments will help you complete the project. You should estimate spending about three to five hours a week working on the course. Some weeks have more work, for example week two is rather heavy, but some weeks will require less. All right, enough introductions. Let's start by talking about communication strategy.
