To continue our discussion of endocrine disorders. This next lecture expands our scope to a few other common conditions encountered in endocrinology practice that are important for all dental practitioners to be aware of and understand. To provide this overview, we have doctor Caroline Kim from the Penn Department of Endocrinology, who provides a focused understanding of a few of the more fascinating and common conditions she encounters clinically. Dr. Kim is an expert in thyroid cancer and in concert with Dr. Sollecito and Stoopler, this section will help explain the thyroid as a gland, its function and potential for dysfunction, and even cancers of the thyroid gland. With the help of our oral medicine specialists, we will cover the increasing incidence of thyroid cancer and the role that the dental professional can play in diagnosing this condition, as well as how to help patients manage the secondary effects of treatment. This provides one small example of the many times a dental professional may identify a potentially life threatening, underlying condition. We will also hear from the doctors, both the direct effects and also the complications of thyroid cancer treatment as they relate to the oral cavity. Another topic covered by Dr. Kim that is widespread in the general population and can present a devastating risk to the oral cavity is osteoporosis, particularly when managed with certain treatments. The doctors will explain not only the mechanism and prevalence of osteoporosis, but also what it means in general to patients including possible secondary effects in the mouth of medications prescribed to treat osteoporosis. To cover all of this and more, we present Dr. Kim.
