Hello, and welcome to this course on Planned Giving,
the final course within the Fundraising and Development
Specialization offered by UC Davis.
My name is Brian Casey,
and I'm the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Planned Giving at UC Davis.
I spent 20 years working in the nonprofit world with the last 10 years in planned giving.
When I was transitioning into Planned Giving from my position as a major gift fundraiser,
I used many of the resources and concepts that I'll introduce to you during this course.
Planned giving is unique because you need to have
technical skills in addition to the people skills.
The relationship building skills are the same as any other type of fundraising,
building trust, and being strategic,
and engaging donors is not exclusive to planned giving.
But to understand planned giving,
you need to be knowledgeable about the technical aspects.
This course is a great start to exposing you to the various topics
needed to be a planned giving professional or a better fundraiser.
I'm excited to be teaching this course.
We have a lot to cover.
In the first module,
I'll introduce you to general tax considerations,
charitable gifts, and deductions for a donor.
This will help lay the groundwork for the rest of the course.
In a second module,
I'll go over some common planned giving terminology,
and define the various planned giving vehicles,
their benefits, and how to give.
We will also discuss the donor,
identifying potential planned giving donors,
their goals, and how to build a relationship with them.
For the third module,
I will switch gears and focus on planned giving administration,
what it means to fulfill a donor's request,
and stay compliant with policies.
In the final module,
I will provide you with resources that you can
use to set-up and administer a planned gift.
Each week is made up of video lectures,
discussion questions, readings, and other activities.
I encourage you to reach out to peers for questions,
so please, help each other out.
We have a lot to cover, so let's go.
