[MUSIC] At this point, your student can learn the A major scale with the Martele as well as the Detache bow stroke. Each note played twice in the upper half of the bow. Once the student has mastered this, then feel free to move forward with other rhythms. The students really enjoy playing the rhythmic variations they have learned, as well as making up their own. Let's get started. Okay, Eva. Now, tell me, I'm going to play the A major scale, can you tell me what bow stroke I'm using? Listen. [MUSIC] What's that called? >> Martele. >> Martele, very good. How did you hear the scale moving? Was it moving up? >> Up. >> It was moving up and? >> Down. >> That's right, it's like when we walk up the stairs. We then come back down the stairs, right? >> Yeah. [MUSIC] >> Okay, you ready to do it? >> Yeah. >> Good. All right, so, lets make sure you're in a good position, so let's tap your fingers over the high dot. Can you look at you're high dot here? That's right. And let's slide your hand on the magic X. And then we're going to tap your fingers again. Now, let's do our Statue of Liberty. Good, can you look right here at the back of your violin? Good. Now, look at me, look over here. Now we're going to bring the violin to you. Don't lift up your head, just let the violin come to you. Very good, that's perfect. Now, can you look over there? Can you look at me? Can you look straight up? Can you shake your head no? Shake your head yes? Can you look down? And look back up? That's it. Good. And then, let's tap your fingers over your high dot. Good. Let's set your bow. So put your bow up here. Now, let's tap our fingers on the bow. Let's check and make sure we have a really good, gentle bow hold. Bend your thumb. And you pretend like you're holding a little baby bird. So you want to be very gentle when you hold this. Okay? Very good. Let's tap here. Now let's hold up the violin. Good, now I'm going to slide your hand back on the magic X, let's make sure we have a little tunnel there, good. Now we're going to play each note two times. In the upper half of the good Martele bow stroke, right? All right, are you ready? Okay. [MUSIC] First finger. [SOUND] Second finger. [SOUND] Third. [SOUND] Now to the E-string. [SOUND] First finger. [SOUND] Two. [SOUND] And three. Good. Now wait right here. Tell the bow to wait. I'm going to check your thumb. Let's tap your thumb. Can you tap it? Good, and we're going to make sure that little muscle in there is like a mushy marshmallow, okay? Good, can you tap it again? Make it softer. Very good. Now we're coming back down the stairs. [SOUND] We're going to take our third finger off and turn it into a wet noodle. Very good. [SOUND] And now your first finger. [SOUND] Whoops. [SOUND] And then take that one off. [SOUND] Good. And now let's put our three fingers on the A string. One, two, three. [SOUND] Take that one off. [SOUND] This one off. [SOUND]. [MUSIC] Very good, good for you. Okay, so let's do another scale. Let's do the scale, and let's do it with another rhythm. So what's your favorite rhythm? >> Hm, puppy dog, puppy dog. >> Puppy dog, puppy dog. Okay good, we'll do puppy dog, puppy dog. Tap your fingers, slide your hand back. Let's put the bow on the A string. [MUSIC] First finger. [MUSIC] Then the E string. [MUSIC] And three. [MUSIC] Now come back down. [MUSIC] Turn it into a noodle. Make your hands very relaxed. Good. [MUSIC] Take that one off. Very good. [MUSIC] Now roll the bow to the A string, and let's put our 3 fingers there. 1, 2, 3. Tap your thumb. Good. [MUSIC] Puppy dog, puppy dog. [MUSIC] Okay, good Eva, let's put your violin in rest position. Scales are very important because they warm up our fingers and bow, and get us ready to play our pieces. So what's the first thing we do when we wake up in the morning, Eva? >> Eat breakfast. >> We eat breakfast, that's right. So we start our day getting warmed up with breakfast, so now we'll start our violin day by warming up with an A Major scale. Okay? Good. [MUSIC]
