[MUSIC] So, let's take one of your objectives and see how you do at developing a technology-based lesson. What is one of your objectives? Well, I want my students to write an essay that presents an argument. >> Good. And what technology would you use to achieve that objective? >> Well, I've already used a Mind Mapping technology to have them brainstorm ideas for their essay. In our next lesson, they're going to write the first draft, so I was going to have them type their draft using a word processing software. Our school has Microsoft Word and Google Docs so I was just going to have them choose one of those. >> I'm impressed. That's a good start. And I think you can do much better than that. All you've really done is substitute the paper and pencils and put typing and computer into place. How is that helping the students increase their learning? >> Well, typing their essay saves paper and erasers. If they make a mistake, they just hit the backspace key, but I see your point. I suppose I could also show them how to use some of the features of the software like spell checker, the dictionary feature and I can show them how to format the drive properly using the software. That would increase their learning. >> Yes. You have certainly augmented their learning by teaching them how to use the technology to improve their drafts, but I still think you can do better. Technology provides so much more than ways to check their spelling or change the font they're using. How can you transform their learning experience using the technology? >> Not sure. Well, I'd love to have the students get feedback from each other on their drafts but I don't really have time to do that in class. >> And is there no way to facilitate the students providing feedback through technology? Think hard. >> Well, if I use Google Docs, the students could share their drafts with each other and could use the comment feature in Google Docs to provide feedback. Or, I just learned about blogs. I could have the students share their drafts on a blog and get feedback from each other that way. >> That's much better. Now they are not only writing a draft, but they are learning how to edit and provide feedback on writing to improve it. You have modified your learning activity and improved it by including technology in a new way but I think you can go even further. How else could you redefine the learning tasks to make full use of the technology and improve some learnings? >> I see where you're going with this. Well I really want them to communicate and share a valid argument with their audience. I think, if after they wrote their first drafts and got feedback from their peers, they should create a presentation using pictures, video, music, other media, to present arguments to the class. >> Very good, newbie. We'll make a technology master out of you yet. Here, take a pencil to remind you of what you have learned here today. You have truly become one with technology. >> Thanks, but. >> Metaphorically, newbie. It's just a pencil. >> Okay, then. [MUSIC]
